After the Civil War, tobacco farmer Washington Duke started a small processing business that grew into the world's largest tobacco business, the American Tobacco Company. This late-19th-century farm includes the Duke family's 1852 home and early factories. The tobacco museum examines the growth of the industry and the history of the family.

Much of the business profit was invested in land and industries, but some was used for humanitarian causes including Duke University, named for the Duke family.

The site is part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov). Events at Duke Homestead, other state historic sites, and state history and art museums are listed at www.ncculture.com.
